What Makes Â鶹ÊÓƵ Stand Out?

Degree Tracks

Â鶹ÊÓƵ offers two Master of Science in Occupational Therapy degree tracks that provide outstanding preparation for roles in traditional settings and emerging areas of need. The five-year Bachelor of Science in Health Science and Master of Science in Occupational Therapy (BSHS-MSOT) program is grounded in a liberal arts foundation. The Entry Level Master of Science in Occupational Therapy degree program, on the other hand, is designed for students who have earned a baccalaureate degree in another area of study and wish to become qualified as an occupational therapist. By offering two degree tracks, Â鶹ÊÓƵ can cater to different educational backgrounds and provide flexibility to students who may want to switch careers or decide to pursue an occupational therapy career after completing a degree in another field.

Real-World Experience

Alvernia's Department of Occupational Therapy provides students with many hands-on experiences during their studies. Students are challenged to think outside the box and take occupational therapy to a new level through diverse clinical and international opportunities. MSOT students have completed clinical rotations at organizations including All Abilities Fitness Center, Hope Rescue Mission, and IM Able and have participated in international assignments in countries such as Haiti, Uganda, and Belize.

Unique Coursework

Another aspect of the MSOT program at Alvernia that differentiates it from programs at universities is the course curriculum. One unique course, for example, is the Pro-bono Clinic course. This course allows students to gain hands-on experience in providing occupational therapy services to individuals in the Reading community. The course involves supervised clinical practice in the Pro-bono Clinic on campus, where students work with clients with various disabilities or injuries to help them improve their functional abilities and quality of life. This course also helps students develop their professional and interpersonal skills through interaction with clients, families, and other healthcare professionals.

School-Life Balance

The occupational programs at Â鶹ÊÓƵ are challenging and fun during the school year. In-person classes only occur twice a week to respect the work schedules of the adults who come to the program. Students also enjoy summers off, which allows for a balance between work-life and family life. Alvernia students are also encouraged to participate in extracurricular activities such as Alternative Breaks and the AOTA Student Conclave Knowledge Bowl. In addition to promoting skill development and knowledge, these opportunities enable students to network with professionals in the field, connect with peers, and become community leaders.
