Â鶹ÊÓƵ has bestowed four of its prestigious awards on alumni and community leaders at its annual President’s Dinner, presided by Dr. Thomas F. Flynn. Honorees for 2018 are James and Cynthia Boscov (posthumously), Penske, and alumni Andres M. Dominguez, Jr., Dr. Melissa R. Marcario and Dr. Philip J. Fromuth.
Jim and Cynthia Boscov are recipients of the Franciscan Award. Jim is the Chairman and CEO of the Boscov’s department store. Members of the Board of Trustees and longtime supporters of the university, the Boscov family is passionate about Alvernia’s Franciscan mission and tradition of civic-mindedness.
Penske Truck Leasing Co., L.P. is the recipient of the 2018 Pro Urbe Award. Penske has supported Â鶹ÊÓƵ’s Reading Collegiate Scholars program since 2016. Penske President & CEO, Brian Hard, will accept the award.
Andres M. Dominguez Jr. and Dr. Melissa Marcario are the 2018 Distinguished Alumni Award winners.
A student of Criminal Justice from Alvernia’s class of 1982, Dominguez served as a Special Agent for the United States Secret Service for 28 years and protected every U.S. President from Ronald Reagan to Barack Obama. Since 2016 he has been Chief of Police of Reading, Pa.
Marcario is a licensed psychologist. Part of the Alvernia class of 2018, she earned her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Northern Illinois University. Marcario is a licensed psychologist with over 20 years of clinical experience helping people reach their potential and resolve obstacles getting in the way of living a purposeful life.
Dr. Philip J. Fromuth receives the Ellen Frei Gruber Award. The Secretary of Education and Superintendent of Schools for the Diocese of Allentown, Fromuth is completing his 37th year in the Diocesan education system. He is a lifelong resident of Reading, Pa.
Awards, presented by Flynn, are Distinguished Alumni Award, recognizing the people who demonstrate the valuable contributions to their professions, community and nation; Ellen Frei Gruber Award honoring individuals who have given outstanding service to their alma mater; Pro Urbe Award presented to a business or organization that performs significant community service and contributes to a higher standard of living in Berks County; and Franciscan Award honoring individuals who selflessly give their time, talents and resources for the betterment of others and is presented for exceptional service to Alvernia, the community and the individual’s profession.
