Black History Month 2024

Â鶹ÊÓƵ's Division of Mission, Diversity and Inclusion (MDI), Office of Justice, Equity and Inclusion (JEI), Student Activities (SA), the Cultural Coalition and the Black Student Union (BSU) invite you to join the Alvernia community at the following events on campus and in the community in honor and celebration of Black History Month:

Black History Month Jazz Night (BSU)

  • Date: February 2, 2024
  • Time: 7:00-9:00 pm
  • Location: Francis Hall Atrium
  • Description:  Black History Month Jazz Night is a celebration to bring in black history month with live music from the band Caya Sol, they play a mix of reggae and jazz music. We will be serving soul food appetizers

 

Black History Month Novelty (JEI)

  • Date: February 5, 2024
  • Time: 1:30-3:30 pm
  • Location: Student Center
  • Description: Join the Office of JEI in the student center and come together with fellow students to color in a giant coloring poster that celebrates Black History Month. Also, learn about all of JEI’s upcoming events for the spring semester.

 

True Black History Museum (SA/JEI/BSU)

  • Date: February 7, 2024
  • Time: 10:00 am-2:00 pm
  • Location: Francis Hall Atrium
  • Description: Miller Gallery Opening Identity: The Journey of Expression Exhibit will feature artists who have impacted the visual arts, music, cultural movements, and more! Traveling Black History exhibit with artifacts dating from the late 1700's to the 21st century!

 

Let’s Talk Â鶹ÊÓƵ It… (BSU)

  • Location: Campus Commons Living Room
  • Description: Join the BSU for one of their signature events to engage in meaningful and intentional conversations with your peers. Topic TBA. 

 

Valentine’s Day Bash & Spread the Love (SA, JEI)

  • Date: February 14, 2024
  • Time: 11:00 am-3:00 pm
  • Location: Quad & Student Center
  • Description: Spreading the love with free hugs & flower carnations!

 

Let’s Talk Â鶹ÊÓƵ It… (BSU)

  • Date: February 21, 2024

  • Location: Campus Commons Lounge Room
  • Description: Join the BSU for one of their signature events to engage in a conversation about Black Love.

 

Expressions of Excellence (21+, Cultural Coalition)

  • Date: February 21, 2024
  • Time: 5:30-8:30 p.m. 
  • Location: Legacy Cigar Lounge, 559 Penn Ave, West Reading, PA 19611
  • Description: The Berks County Cultural Coalition is featuring local artists at this event to celebrate African American culture and the arts. There will be a live art display by Jason Moss and a combined breakdancing, graffiti art, MC and DJ performance of the five elements of hip-hop by DJ H. Vidal and Hamilton Newton as a tribute to 50 years of hip-hop. 

 

Black History Month Celebration (MDI)

  • Date: February 23, 2024
  • Time: 5:00 pm
  • Location: Francis Hall
  • Description: The evening program will include Black visual art with meet-the-artist opportunities, networking with Berks County Black leaders, a gospel ensemble, live jazz/blues, and brief presentations that will include Black healthcare, the local NAACP, Black Press and much more!

 

Diversity & Healthcare (BSU)

  • Date: February 28, 2024
  • Time: 6:00-8:00 pm
  • Location: Bernadine Hall lecture Hall
  • Description: BSU will be discussing Black Excellence in healthcare. Stories from individuals and their positions in healthcare.
