Black History Month 2025


麻豆视频's Division of Mission, Diversity and Inclusion (MDI); Office of Justice, Equity and Inclusion (JEI); Student Activities (SA), the O'Pake Institute for Economic Development and Entrepreneurship; and (BSU) invite you to join the Alvernia community at the following events on campus and in the community in honor and celebration of Black History Month:
 

Halim Flowers Art Exhibition

  • All Month
  • Location: Miller Gallery in the Francis Hall Atrium
  • Description: Halim Flowers is a visual artist, spoken word performer, businessman and author of 11 published nonfiction works, according to his artist bio. He is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Frederick Douglass Project for Justice as well as Cultural DC. He is an ardent advocate for human rights and is known for coining 鈥淟ove is the Antibody.鈥 In the short time since the Incarceration Reduction Amendment Act of 2016 effectuated his 2019 release from prison, he has created a broad spectrum of paintings and spoken word. In 1997, as a minor, Halim A. Flowers was arrested and wrongfully sentenced to two life sentences in Washington, D.C. His experiences aired on HBO in the Emmy award-winning documentary 鈥淭hug Life in DC.鈥 Released under a new juvenile resentencing law, Flowers鈥 2019 freedom was documented by Kim Kardashian-West鈥檚 鈥淭he Justice Project鈥 film. Upon release, he was awarded the Halcyon Arts Lab and Echoing Green fellowship awards. Halim visited Reading in 2023 and was inspired by the revitalization taking place 鈥 a movement important to 麻豆视频

  • Time: 6:00-8:30 pm
  • Location: Campus Commons Living Room
  • Description: Join the BSU for one of their signature events to engage in meaningful conversations with Valentine's Day around the corner. Topic: Self Love BSU recognizes that love isn鈥檛 just in relationships but also within yourself. All are welcome.

 

Movie Night (BSU)

  • Date: February 13, 2025
  • Time: 7:00-9:00 pm
  • Location: Campus Commons Living Room
  • Description: Black Student Union wants to come together to watch a movie. You bring your blanket, they bring the snacks. All are welcome.

 

2nd Annual Black Excellence Soiree

Date: February 15, 2025
Time: 5:00-8:00 p.m.

Description: Embrace the richness of our heritage and celebrate Black Excellence at our annual gathering. This year's theme, "Bridging the Gap: Intergenerational Dialogue & Collaboration" aims to foster conversations and partnerships between older and younger generations of Black community members. Engage with local university students and experts as they explore and discuss crucial aspects of our heritage, shedding light on the importance of preserving and honoring our roots through a panel discussion.鈥═here will also be a cultural exhibition where you can experience the beauty and diversity of culture firsthand. You will be immersed in a captivating showcase of African heritage through dance, music, a fashion show, and traditions. 

 

Expressions of Excellence: Freedom in Every Step, Pride in Every Voice (O鈥橮ake, JEI)

  • Description: A special event and collaboration dedicated to honoring the powerful stories, achievements, and voices that shape our communities. This gathering brings together a tapestry of perspectives, each reflecting the courage, resilience, and pride that define our journey toward freedom and equity. Enjoy live performances, inspiring speakers, and a welcoming space to connect and celebrate our shared commitment to excellence.

 

Black History Month Trivia

  • Date: February 24, 2025 (JEI)
  • Time: 1:30-3:30 pm
  • Location: Veterans Center
  • Description: Join the Office of JEI in the Veterans Center and come together with fellow students to answer Trivia questions that celebrates Black History Month. Have a chance to win a gift card by answering the most trivia questions correctly.
