Spooky Sales: Leveraging Halloween for Customer Engagement
O'Pake Blog: Spooky Sales

By Logan Goldenberg
Fellow of Marketing

At the O'Pake Institute for Economic Development and Entrepreneurship, where we offer business consulting services powered by students from 麻豆视频, we believe that every season presents unique opportunities for businesses to engage with their audiences in fresh and exciting ways. October, particularly through Halloween, is no exception. While many may see this month as merely a fun, spooky time for kids, savvy businesses understand that Halloween is a goldmine for marketing and customer engagement.

Halloween, and the broader fall season, has grown to become a multi-billion-dollar industry in the U.S., with consumers eagerly spending on costumes, decorations, candy, and themed events. The holiday is no longer just about trick-or-treating for kids; it鈥檚 become an experience for all ages. This presents a valuable opportunity for businesses to tap into the Halloween spirit to connect with customers, build brand awareness, and drive sales.

Why October Matters for Businesses

October is about more than just candy and costumes 鈥 it鈥檚 about anticipation and excitement. People are in a festive mindset, ready to celebrate and indulge in seasonal experiences. This is an emotional connection that businesses can leverage, making October a prime time to boost customer engagement.

Businesses that use seasonal themes like Halloween can create memorable marketing campaigns that resonate emotionally with their target audience. Whether it鈥檚 through spooky promotions, themed products, or creative marketing, aligning with Halloween can help brands stand out in a crowded market.

Marketing Strategies for October

If you're a business owner looking to take advantage of Halloween marketing, here are a few strategies you can implement this October:

  • Spooky Promotions and Discounts: Special Halloween-themed promotions, such as "spooky sales" or "haunted discounts," can entice customers to make purchases. Offering limited time offers adds a sense of urgency, encouraging people to act quickly.
  • Seasonal Product Launches: Consider introducing limited-edition products with a Halloween twist. Whether it's a pumpkin-spiced version of your usual offerings or Halloween-themed packaging, seasonal products can generate excitement and demand.
  • Halloween-Themed Events: Hosting a Halloween event鈥攙irtual or in-person鈥攃an be a great way to engage your community. Think costume contests, haunted house tours, or spooky trivia nights. Events like these create opportunities for customer interaction and brand exposure.
  • User-Generated Content Campaigns: Encourage your audience to participate in Halloween by sharing their costumes, decorations, or themed creations on social media. You can offer a prize for the best submission, which will help generate buzz and organic engagement.
  • Social Media Fun: Social media is a great platform for engaging with customers during the Halloween season. Try creating fun, interactive content like polls, quizzes, or Halloween-themed challenges to encourage audience participation. The more playful and engaging, the better!

The Importance of Authenticity

While Halloween offers a fun way to engage customers, it鈥檚 essential to keep your brand鈥檚 identity in mind. Authenticity resonates with consumers. Ensure your Halloween-themed promotions or events align with your brand's values and image. The most successful campaigns are those that balance festive fun with brand integrity.

At the O'Pake Institute, we encourage businesses to strike that balance, ensuring that while they embrace the seasonal fun, they stay true to their overall mission and customer base. This authenticity helps build trust and long-term loyalty with customers.

Embrace October鈥檚 Marketing Power

Halloween and the month of October offer a unique window of opportunity for businesses to increase customer engagement and grow their audience. By embracing the festive spirit with creativity and authenticity, businesses can drive traffic, sales, and long-term customer loyalty. By incorporating some of these strategies, your business can turn Halloween from a holiday for kids into a marketing treat for your brand.

Back to School: Business Edition! Opportunities to Network on Campus
O'Pake Blog: Back to School

As we dive into the new semester, there鈥檚 an air of excitement for students gearing up to continue their academic journeys. But as any seasoned entrepreneur will tell you, college isn鈥檛 just about lectures and textbooks 鈥 it鈥檚 also fertile ground for building connections that can shape your future. If you're a business-minded student, 麻豆视频's campus offers countless opportunities to network, collaborate, and even launch your career.

Classrooms: Your First Network

The classroom is the first place that offers prime networking opportunities. It might seem obvious but don't underestimate the power of your classmates. You are sitting next to the future marketing managers, accountants, and entrepreneurs who could end up being your future business partners. Whether it鈥檚 a group project or a lively debate during class, these interactions often lead to deeper conversations that go beyond just academics. Exchange ideas, collaborate on projects, and share your visions 鈥 you never know when you might meet someone who complements your business goals.

Your professors are another often overlooked resource. They come from various industries and have years of experience and vast professional networks. Building a strong relationship with your professors can lead to internships, recommendations, and even job opportunities. Many professors are also willing to make introductions to professionals they know, but only if you鈥檝e shown initiative and interest.

Dorms and Social Gatherings: Casual Networking

Believe it or not, the dorms can be a hotspot for networking. Living on campus means you're constantly surrounded by creative and ambitious students. Those late-night brainstorming sessions or casual conversations in the common room can lead to ideas that spark a business or project collaboration.

Dorm life offers a unique environment where you can build personal connections with fellow students who might just be your next business co-founder or investor.

Student Organizations: Where Like Minds Gather

If you鈥檙e serious about business, consider joining or even leading a student organization. These clubs attract motivated individuals who are interested in entrepreneurship, finance, marketing, or any number of business-related fields. Whether it's a business society, marketing club, or an investment group, these organizations provide structured networking opportunities where students can collaborate, share ideas, and potentially work on projects that mimic real-world business scenarios.

At 麻豆视频, many students who join clubs or organizations also seek involvement in real-world consulting experiences. And that brings us to a perfect opportunity to mention鈥疶he O'Pake Institute for Economic Development and Entrepreneurship.

The O'Pake Institute: Real-World Experience on Campus

Here at鈥疶he O'Pake Institute, we are dedicated to helping students gain practical, hands-on experience in business consulting while still in school. Students who work with us are paired with real businesses, providing services that range from marketing strategies to financial planning and more. You鈥檒l have the chance to work on real projects, solve real problems, and add those experiences to your resume before you even graduate.

Our student Fellows not only gain incredible hands-on experience, but they also build relationships with local business leaders and industry experts. Many of our past Fellows have used these experiences to land internships and job offers and even launch their own businesses. This is networking at its finest 鈥 gaining both practical experience and connections that could last a lifetime.

Campus Events: The Ultimate Networking Playground

Throughout the academic year, 麻豆视频 hosts numerous events, such as career fairs, speaker series, and panel discussions featuring alums and business leaders. Attending these events provides invaluable opportunities to meet professionals in various industries. Don鈥檛 be afraid to ask questions or introduce yourself after the event. These moments can lead to lasting professional relationships and valuable mentorships.

Career fairs are essential for any student looking to make business connections. You have the chance to talk one-on-one with company representatives, and often, those conversations are less formal than a traditional job interview. Even if you鈥檙e not actively job-hunting, these events help you get a sense of what employers are looking for and can help you build your network for the future.

Take Initiative: Your Future is in Your Hands

Networking in college requires intentional effort. It鈥檚 about striking up conversations, attending events, and seeking out opportunities like those at鈥疶he O'Pake Institute. Whether it鈥檚 in the classroom, the dorm, or at a campus event, you are constantly surrounded by people who could be future collaborators, mentors, or partners.

So, as you return to campus, remember that every interaction is a potential networking opportunity. Keep an open mind, be proactive, and take advantage of all the opportunities 麻豆视频 has to offer. And, if you鈥檙e serious about gaining real-world business experience while still in school, consider joining us at The O'Pake Institute. You might just meet your next business partner or launch your future career!

Client Case Study | Perspective Unlimited
O'Pake blog case study perspective unlimited

By Logan Goldenberg
Fellow of Marketing

Buddy Holmes, the innovative entrepreneur behind Perspective Unlimited Drone and Multimedia Services LLC, has built a business that offers cutting-edge drone and multimedia solutions. From aerial photography to detailed multimedia productions, Perspective Unlimited is at the forefront of technological advancements in its field. However, like many small business owners, Holmes faced challenges in managing his financials and positioning his business for growth. This is where the O鈥橮ake Institute at 麻豆视频 stepped in to provide crucial support through its O鈥橮ake Fellows program.

The O鈥橮ake Institute assigned Anthony Florkowski, an O鈥橮ake Fellow specializing in finance, to work closely with Holmes. Florkowski鈥檚 role was to help Holmes gain financial literacy and create the necessary financial documents to support the business's growth. Florkowski explains, "While working with Buddy Holmes and his company Perspective Unlimited, I looked at his financials and populated financial statements for him. I gave him some financial literacy and helped him understand what each financial statement means and why it is important for a company and investors. I also created a one-page business summary for Perspective Unlimited for future investors."

The collaboration between Holmes and Florkowski was hands-on, with frequent face-to-face meetings that helped foster a strong client relationship. Florkowski 's approach was not just about creating documents but ensuring Holmes understood the importance of each financial element and how it contributes to the overall health of his business. One of the most significant outcomes of this partnership was the development of a comprehensive financial plan for Perspective Unlimited. "It was the creation of the financial plan that helped me to realize more about how to price my services and the type of expenses I can have that I was not aware of," Holmes shared. This plan included detailed Excel worksheets for tracking revenue and expenses, which Holmes found particularly useful. "It was very straightforward and simple in regards to creating Excel worksheets to track revenue and expenses," he added. Another critical milestone was Buddy's application for a FLIC grant, which would provide $5,000 worth of funding for camera equipment鈥攁 pivotal investment for his business. "I was greatly surprised that they were going to help me with getting a FLIC grant," Holmes said, expressing his appreciation for the support he received.

The work done by Florkowski, and the O鈥橮ake Institute has set Perspective Unlimited on a path toward sustainable growth. The financial literacy Holmes gained through this process will continue to be a vital asset as he navigates the complexities of running a business. "I hope to continue growing and know I will refer to what I learned with operating a business besides just offering services and products," Holmes noted.

For Florkowski, the experience of working with Holmes was invaluable. "The experience gained working on this project allowed me to create a foundation for creating healthy and lasting client relationships. This experience also gave me a better idea as to what I can do better for the next clients that I work with," Florkowski reflected. The hands-on nature of this project provided Florkowski with insights into both the financial needs of a small business and the importance of building strong, personal connections with clients.

The collaboration between Perspective Unlimited and the O鈥橮ake Institute exemplifies the power of tailored support and financial education in driving business success. With a solid financial foundation in place and ongoing support from the O鈥橮ake Institute, Buddy Holmes is well-positioned to take Perspective Unlimited to new heights. This case study highlights the success of the partnership and the importance of financial literacy and client relationships in small business.

Client Case Study | Jon King & AU Golf Team
O'Pake Blog: Jon King

By Logan Goldenberg
Fellow of Marketing

麻豆视频鈥檚 O鈥橮ake Institute for Economic Development and Entrepreneurship Fellows of Engineering Kayla Moriarty and Kathryn Palmer, and Fellows of Computer Science Jaden Roman, Mauro PellotVazquez, Gino Giacolona, and Dominic Santoro worked with Instructional Tech Faculty Support Manager and Men鈥檚 Head Golf Coach, Jon King, throughout the spring semester. Two major initiatives from the Fellow team brought about significant advancements and provided invaluable learning experiences for all parties involved.

Moriarty and her team were tasked with designing golf tee markers for Alvernia鈥檚 golf teams and events. The project involved creating 72 markers, 8 inches long and an inch thick, using 3D printing technology. After several iterations, it became clear that sand casting at a local business in Reading was a more viable solution for producing durable metal markers. Reflecting on the experience, Moriarty says, 鈥淲orking with Mr. King has been an absolute pleasure; he is extremely passionate about the golf team at Alvernia and wants both teams to succeed. Kathryn Palmer and I were able to easily collaborate with Mr. King and ensure we captured his vision for the golf tee markers.鈥 She added, 鈥淭his project taught me the importance of transparent communication with clients, ensuring they are aware of each step and confirming that the progress aligns with their vision.鈥

While Moriarty and Palmer were creating tee markers, Roman and his team of Fellows were focused on creating a system to generate custom digital trophies for Alvernia's golf players. This involved extensive planning, mastering Photoshop, collaborating with computer science Fellows to develop Python scripts, and executing a live demo at the Alvernia Golf Invitational. 鈥淲orking with Jon King, who has endless ideas and experience, made this an incredibly valuable opportunity for me,鈥 Roman shared. 鈥淚 was taken out of my comfort zone and committed to gaining new skills. The experience has made me more comfortable with entering unfamiliar territory in my future projects. I鈥檓 glad I got the opportunity to learn Photoshop and digital design and demonstrate a project I cared so much about.鈥

Jon King expressed his appreciation for the collaboration with the O'Pake Fellows, noting how it enhanced his understanding of the technical aspects of his projects. 鈥淲orking with Fellows who are pursuing degrees related to the projects brought the steps out into the open for all of us,鈥 King said. 鈥淏eing in regular meetings with the Fellows has put each of those steps out on the table, which has been great.鈥 He highlighted the brainstorming process and detailed discussions as particularly enjoyable aspects of working with the Fellows. King is eager to showcase Moriarty鈥檚 tee markers and continue refining Roman鈥檚 digital trophy system. 鈥淚 have enjoyed the opportunity to work with young, creative professionals and look forward to many more interactions,鈥 he added.

The collaboration between Jon King and the O'Pake Institute exemplifies the power of combining passion, innovation, and education. Kayla Moriarty and Jaden Roman鈥檚 projects not only advanced 麻豆视频鈥檚 golf program but also provided them with invaluable skills and experiences. Jon King's vision and enthusiasm, paired with the Fellows鈥 dedication, resulted in successful and impactful outcomes. This partnership is a testament to creative collaboration's potential in achieving excellence.

Unlocking Success: Lifelong Learning in the Digital Marketing Age
O'Pake blog: Unlocking Success Lifelong Learning

By Jennifer Weasner 鈥23
Project Manager of Marketing & Communications

When working in a field that relies so heavily on the digital world and new platform development, it is crucial to strive to be a lifelong learner. An article written for Indeed explains the concept: 鈥淟earning is ideally a continuous process that may require you to undertake beyond your formal education. People who embrace learning beyond the classroom are called lifelong learners, as they take advantage of every opportunity to improve their skills in diverse fields.鈥 麻豆视频 is guided by Franciscan values and the ideal of 鈥渒nowledge joined with love鈥 and rooted in the Catholic and liberal arts traditions. Alvernia is a rigorous, caring, and inclusive learning community committed to academic excellence and to being and fostering broadly educated, life-long learners.

Social media marketing is a specific example of a field that is constantly growing and expanding through new platforms and developments. With these continuous new developments also come new opportunities on how businesses and organizations can market. Resources that can be helpful to engage with include social media platforms themselves such as LinkedIn and TikTok, but it can also be helpful to engage with others through networking opportunities or having a professional mentor.

While marketing is commonly associated with creativity, there is also a lot that goes on behind the scenes and involves more analytics rather than creativity. Marketers often analyze the demographics of audiences per platform, the metrics of post-performance, and even how algorithms determine how a post may or may not be seen by the intended audience.

Audience

Marketers often consider the audience on these platforms and what content they want to see. For example, LinkedIn is usually associated with a more professional audience, so a blog post about a professional or educational topic would be an ideal fit. However, that same blog post would not be the ideal content for TikTok because this audience is often looking for more fun and engaging content, usually associated with trends. When considering the audience per platform, marketers may often look towards the demographic information and consider the location, age, and gender. Platforms such as LinkedIn also showcase the analytics of job demographics such as job industry, job function and seniority level. All these statistics can be used to gain a deeper understanding of the individuals viewing the organization鈥檚 content from behind the screen.

Metrics

It is easy for Social Media Managers and senior executives within an organization to get distracted and excited by the number of likes, comments and followers, but these metrics are just vanity metrics. A vanity metric 鈥渋s a social media metric that looks impressive at a glance but doesn鈥檛 necessarily indicate a company鈥檚 overall success in reaching its goals.鈥 Common metrics that Social Media Marketers tend to look at have to do with post performance. It is helpful to see what posts are performing the best so that the audience and the content that they want to see can be better understood.

Algorithms

The truth is, vanity metrics mean nothing especially with the rise of algorithm based social media platforms. The concept of algorithms playing a role in the content that is being consumed is not new. Specifically, on TikTok and the 鈥渇or you page,鈥 media consumers are constantly being given the content that the algorithm sees them enjoying the most. Sprout Social explains that in the world of social media marketing, 鈥渁lgorithms are rules, signals and data that govern the platform鈥檚 operation. These algorithms determine how content is filtered, ranked, selected and recommended to users. In some ways, algorithms influence our choices and what we see on social media.鈥

鈥淪ocial listening is a key practice when considering how your content might rank in the algorithm,鈥 said Sarah Matarella, social media manager at 麻豆视频. 鈥淲hether it鈥檚 catering relevant trends to your brand鈥檚 voice and tone or tapping into current events and news these tactics will assist with strategy optimization and increase the return on investment of your content creation efforts as long as the target audience is kept at the forefront.鈥

TikTok isn鈥檛 the only platform where the content is being sifted through by the use of algorithms prior to it coming across the consumers screens. In the same article as mentioned above, Sprout Social explains, 鈥淔acebook News Feed and Instagram Feed monitor user behavior, interests and actions to recommend relevant content. For instance, if you engage with basketball content, you鈥檒l likely see more of it.鈥

Final Thoughts

Social Media Marketing is more than just posting to various social media platforms but rather understanding the demographic per platform and the content that each audience is looking for while scrolling. In the world of marketing, it is incredibly important to not allow yourself to become stagnant in professional growth. Professionals working in marketing should strive for the curiosity of being a lifelong learner and wanting to become educated oneself about the new developments, applications and trends within the profession.

O'Pake blog unlocking opportunities

By Logan Goldenberg

Summer is upon us, and while it鈥檚 a great time for vacations and relaxation, it鈥檚 also the prime season for something equally exciting: internships! Summer internships are a crucial step in the journey toward professional development and leadership. Let鈥檚 dive into why these experiences are so important and why you should start planning yours now.

Why Internships Matter

Internships are more than just a line on your resume. They are gateways to real-world experience, personal growth, and professional networking. Here are a few reasons why they are essential:

  • Hands-On Experience: Internships provide the opportunity to apply classroom knowledge to real-world situations. Whether it鈥檚 through handling projects, solving problems, or contributing to team efforts, the skills gained are invaluable.
  • Networking Opportunities: Internships allow you to connect with professionals in your field. Building a network early on can open doors to job offers, mentorship, and career advice that can be beneficial long after the internship ends.
  • Resume Building: Employers look for candidates with experience. An internship can differentiate you from other applicants, showcasing your initiative and commitment to your career path.
  • Career Exploration: Not sure if your major is the right fit? An internship lets you test the waters and explore different career paths without a long-term commitment.

When to Start Applying

You might be surprised to learn how early you need to start thinking about your summer internship. Some companies begin their recruitment process as early as the previous fall, with deadlines for summer internships often closing by January. That鈥檚 right鈥攚hile packing away holiday decorations, it鈥檚 also time to polish your resume and prepare your applications!

Tips for Securing a Summer Internship

  • Start Early: Begin your search in the fall semester. Research companies, attend career fairs, and keep an eye on job boards.
  • Leverage Resources: Utilize your university鈥檚 career services, LinkedIn, and other professional networks.
  • Tailor Your Application: Customize your resume and cover letter for each application. Highlight relevant coursework, skills, and experiences that make you a strong candidate.
  • Prepare for Interviews: Practice common interview questions, research the company, and be ready to discuss how your background aligns with the internship role.
  • Follow-up: After submitting your application and attending interviews, send a thank-you note. It鈥檚 a small gesture that can leave a lasting impression.

In Conclusion

Summer internships are a fantastic way to enhance your education, build your resume, and set yourself up for future success. While it may seem daunting to start planning so far in advance, the benefits outweigh the effort. So, don鈥檛 wait鈥攂egin your search today and unlock the opportunities that await you!

Client Case Study | Echo Caribbean Foundation
O'Pake blog: Echo Caribbean

Written by Jennifer Weasner 鈥23
Project Manager of Marketing & Communications

麻豆视频鈥檚 O鈥橮ake Institute for Economic Development and Entrepreneurship Fellows of Marketing, Logan Goldenberg and Joseph Fragale collaborated to work on a strategic marketing and communications plan for the Echo Caribbean Foundation throughout the Spring semester. The Echo Caribbean Foundation, owned by Jammy Alexis and his mother, is a local Berks County organization that looks to empower immigrants within the community.

The Fellows team developed a strategic marketing and communications strategy, beginning with a comprehensive SWOT analysis and opportunity assessment. This initial phase allowed Goldenberg and Fragale to familiarize themselves with the client's existing social media presence and identify areas for improvement.

As a first-year student at 麻豆视频, Goldenberg reflects on the project, saying, 鈥淪ince Echo Caribbean Foundation was my first client, I learned many foundational lessons. I learned how to present our findings to the client, work with my co-worker on content ideas, and even how to book a conference room!鈥 Goldenberg further explains that while finalizing work for the client feels good, presenting it is where he finds the most enjoyment. 鈥淭aking turns with Joseph Fragale in presentations and answering questions as we moved forward was the most eye-opening and engaging experience I have had, not just with O鈥橮ake, but at Alvernia as a whole.鈥 Alexis, co-owner of Echo Caribbean Foundation, reflects on his time working with the O鈥橮ake Fellows, describing the experience as transformative. The Fellows gave them 鈥渢he confidence and tools to effectively communicate our mission.鈥 Alexis shares that the strategic marketing and communications plan has become the foundation鈥檚 鈥渟ocial media playbook鈥 that they "will utilize moving forward. We鈥檒l use their content scheduling, engagement tips, and analytics tracking to boost our online presence. Their strategies will help us build a vibrant online community and increase support for our work.鈥

When asked to share more about what working with the O鈥橮ake Fellows has taught both him and his mother, Alexis says, 鈥淲orking with the O鈥橮ake Fellows has been eye-opening. They鈥檝e taught us how to target our audience, craft engaging messages, and use data to drive our marketing. Now, we can better connect with our community and amplify our impact.鈥

The project not only provided significant benefits to the Echo Caribbean Foundation but also served as an invaluable learning experience for the Fellows. By applying their academic knowledge to real-world scenarios, they enhanced their professional skills and gained insights into the practical aspects of strategic marketing. This collaboration exemplifies the impactful work done by O鈥橮ake鈥檚 creative services team, which offers a wide range of services, including social marketing, to help organizations achieve their goals.

What did you enjoy most about working on this project/with Jammy?

Working on the project had a lot of fun moments. Sure, the feeling of finalizing a piece of work for the client feels good, but the act of presenting it is where I find the most enjoyment. Experiential Learning: Insights from Brianna and Max
O'Pake Blog: Experiential Learning

By Logan Goldenberg

Welcome to 麻豆视频鈥檚 O'Pake Institute for Economic Development & Entrepreneurship blog! We pride ourselves on being a student-run business consulting firm that not only aids local businesses but also nurtures the future leaders of tomorrow. Today, we're excited to share insights from two of our dedicated team members: Brianna Schneider, an MBA Candidate and current graduate assistant, and Max Horn, MBA a former graduate assistant who continues to make significant contributions to our community.

Brianna Schneider: Cultivating Future Leaders

Brianna Schneider serves as the graduate assistant of student services at the O'Pake Institute. Before joining O'Pake, she worked鈥攁nd still works鈥攊n the Office of Institutional Advancement as a graduate assistant of annual giving. Her dual roles highlight her dedication and ability to juggle multiple responsibilities effectively.

Daily Responsibilities and Recruitment Process

Schneider's day-to-day activities involve overseeing a group of Fellows, providing them with project plans, and checking in with them weekly. She is also deeply involved in recruitment, assessing candidates based on their performance, leadership qualities, and other factors. 鈥淲e look at a variety of things, including performance inside and outside of the classroom, and leadership,鈥 she explains, detailing the meticulous process of narrowing down candidates through interviews.

Challenges and Triumphs

One of Schneider's significant achievements is the Fellow reflection project, launched at the year-in-review event. This project helps fellows track their experiences and skills gained during the program. Coordinating event posters showcasing clients, skills, and favorite projects was a monumental task. 鈥淚t was a large challenge to coordinate every poster for the event,鈥 Schneider recalls.

Work-Life Balance and Inspiration

Balancing her workload and personal life is something Schneider manages through effective time management. 鈥淚 utilize the Outlook Calendar to block out time for personal time, working hours, and homework,鈥 she shares. Her brother, a combat engineer in the military, is her source of inspiration, reminding her of the value of perseverance and dedication.

Max Horn, MBA: From graduate assistant to experiential learning specialist

Max Horn's journey at O'Pake began as a graduate assistant. Now, as the Student Experiential Learning Specialist and Admissions Counselor, Horn鈥檚 new role allows him to foster relationships with prospective students and guide them through their educational journey at Alvernia.

A Day in the Life

Horn鈥檚 responsibilities vary with the seasons. During travel season, he spends much time visiting high schools and attending college fairs. His favorite part of the job? 鈥淪eeing the beginning to the end, the storytelling of telling future students my story,鈥 Horn says. He also enjoys advocating for Alvernia, a place that significantly shaped his own academic and personal development.

Balancing Multiple Roles and Overcoming Challenges

Maintaining a work-life balance involves engaging in activities outside of work. Horn enjoys walking, hiking, and coaching an ice hockey team. 鈥淐oaching is something that I can bring value to outside of my life. Inspiring the youth is an outlet for me,鈥 he shares.

Horn鈥檚 journey wasn鈥檛 without its hurdles. Growing up with dyslexia, school was challenging, but it also made his achievements more rewarding. 鈥淧eople label it as a learning disability, but I see it as that I can do what I do. It鈥檚 an extra challenge that makes overcoming something tough much more rewarding,鈥 Horn explains.

Sources of Inspiration

Horn draws inspiration from his parents and younger sister, whose support and drive motivate him. Additionally, he credits Michelle Conway for imparting a crucial piece of wisdom: 鈥淭ry not to live in the past or the future, keep your feet planted in the soil of the present as here is where you鈥檒l grow.鈥 This advice has helped Horn stay focused on the present, enhancing his personal and professional growth.

Conclusion

The stories of Brianna Schneider and Max Horn exemplify the dedication and passion that drive the O'Pake Institute. Their experiences highlight the importance of mentorship, resilience, and the value of real-world experience in shaping future business leaders. As we continue to support our fellows and the local business community, we remain committed to fostering an environment where our team can thrive and make a meaningful impact.

O鈥橮ake鈥檚 Impact on Graduating Fellows
O'Pake blog: Graduating fellows

By: Dane Sabarese
Fellow of communications

As the weather gets warmer, 麻豆视频 and the O鈥橮ake Institute for Economic Development & Entrepreneurship say goodbye to fourteen of our best and brightest young minds as they prepare to enter the real world and start their professional careers after Commencement. The O鈥橮ake Institute aims to accelerate the maturing process of your average eighteen-year-old undergraduate so that when the time comes that they must walk across the stage and away from the classroom, they are fully equipped with the skills and qualities to be an asset wherever they land.

On May 11th, 麻豆视频 held its Commencement Ceremony at 1 p.m. at the Santander Arena in downtown Reading, PA.鈥

Andrew Deschenes, the O鈥橮ake Institute鈥檚 Fellow of finance, graduated with an entry-level job as a treasury and pricing financial analyst at Mitsubishi HC Capital Canada, North America鈥檚 largest non-bank and non-captive financial institution.

鈥淥鈥橮ake was astonishing as it motivates students to learn鈥痯ractically鈥痺hile balancing academics and sometimes athletics. Another instrumental aspect I took away from O鈥橮ake was the ability to bridge academic concepts and theories to real-life clients,鈥濃痵aid Deschenes. One critical piece of the puzzle that is often overlooked with the O鈥橮ake Institute is鈥痶he fact鈥痶hat it encourages students to apply what they are learning in textbooks to the professional world, and that is all a part of the maturing process in terms of professional development.鈥

The O鈥橮ake Institute aims to have its Fellows excel鈥痠n the professional world鈥痜rom day one.鈥淥鈥橮ake was a great way to build my image in my鈥痳espective鈥痜ield. From navigating research to pitching new financial models, it helped me understand the world of consulting, which is essential for interview preparation.鈥濃疍eschenes also enrolled in a CFA program, taking the level one exam in August. Exploring Leap Day: A Journey Through Time
O'Pake Blog: Leap year

By Logan Goldenberg
Fellow of Marketing

Welcome to the O鈥橮ake Institute Blog! Today, we delve into the fascinating world of Leap Day鈥攁 curious phenomenon that adds a splash of excitement to our calendars every four years.

Our journey begins with insights from two esteemed members of the 麻豆视频 faculty, Professor Jamie Becker and Professor Teri Price, who generously shared their knowledge on this intriguing topic.

Professor Teri Price, a passionate physics educator, unravels the mysteries of Leap Day with clarity and enthusiasm: 鈥淲e use a solar calendar in which one year is the time it takes the Sun to return to the same position in the sky. After four years, those extra 6 hours add up to a full Solar Day.鈥

In simple terms, Leap Day is our way of keeping our calendars aligned with the solar year, ensuring that our seasons stay in sync with our daily lives.

Ah, the elegance of simplicity! February鈥檚 brevity makes it the perfect candidate for hosting our bonus day, maintaining the balance of our calendar without causing too much disruption.

Meanwhile, Professor Jamie Becker, a dedicated biologist, infuses Leap Day with a sense of wonder and possibility: 鈥淚鈥檓 excited that Leap Day gives me 24 extra hours to reveal an unseen world and provide experiential learning opportunities to Alvernia students.鈥

For Professor Becker, Leap Day isn鈥檛 just about adjusting our calendars; it鈥檚 an opportunity to delve deeper into the wonders of nature, igniting curiosity and fostering learning in the hearts of students.

As we journey through time, it鈥檚 fascinating to learn that Earth鈥檚 rotation is gradually slowing down, imperceptibly stretching each day. Professor Price explains: 鈥淓arth鈥檚 rotation about its axis is slowing down by around a millisecond or two per century. Eventually, after around 4 million years, the day will be long enough that the leap year won鈥檛 be needed.鈥

Indeed, the story of Leap Day is a testament to the intricate dance between human ingenuity and the rhythms of the cosmos.

In conclusion, Leap Day serves as a reminder of the marvels of our universe and the ingenuity of those who came before us. As we celebrate this extra day, let鈥檚 embrace the opportunity to learn, explore, and marvel at the wonders of time.

Empowering Young Minds: Emily Sano鈥檚 Inspiring Children鈥檚 Book
O'Pake Blog: Young Minds

By Logan Goldenberg
Fellow of Marketing

At 麻豆视频鈥檚 O鈥橮ake Institute, we are thrilled to celebrate the remarkable achievement of our own, Emily Sano, a Fellow of Digital Media and Business Management. Emily recently unveiled her debut children鈥檚 book, a heartwarming tale featuring a charming purple elephant navigating the complexities of decision-making, Millie鈥檚 Many Choices.

In her book, Emily crafts a delightful narrative that resonates deeply with children and adults alike. The story follows the adorable purple elephant as it grapples with a tough decision: choosing which toy to buy in a bustling store. Through whimsical illustrations and engaging storytelling, Emily effortlessly conveys a powerful message鈥攖hat decision-making does not have to be daunting and often leads to positive outcomes, regardless of the choice.

Reflecting on her inspiration for the book, Emily shared, 鈥淚 had the opportunity last year to illustrate a book for Jerry Moyer called Time to Fly. It was a lot of hard work but a super rewarding process that I really enjoyed doing.鈥 Drawing from this experience, Emily embarked on her creative journey, fueled by the realization that she could channel her passion and talent into her own project.

Emily鈥檚 deep love for children鈥檚 literature shines through as she explains, 鈥淚 have always been into reading, even as a child. I still will not let my mom donate my favorite children鈥檚 books. So, it was really natural for me to go in that direction.鈥 By creating a children鈥檚 book, Emily found a canvas where she could blend her love for storytelling with her passion for captivating illustrations.

However, what sets Emily鈥檚 book apart is its focus on the theme of decision-making鈥攁 topic close to her heart. 鈥淚 have always struggled with decision-making my entire life. I think it鈥檚 something that can be misunderstood, especially in children,鈥 Emily shared. Through her narrative, she hopes to shed light on the challenges of decision-making, particularly for young minds, and offer reassurance that every choice, no matter how small, is valid and ultimately leads to growth.

At 麻豆视频鈥檚 O鈥橮ake Institute, we are immensely proud to support Emily in her creative endeavors. Her book serves as a testament to the talent and dedication of our fellows, showcasing their ability to inspire and empower through storytelling.

As parents and educators, we are presented with a valuable opportunity to engage with children in decision-making, fostering understanding and empathy. Emily鈥檚 book provides a valuable resource for families and classrooms, encouraging open dialogue and promoting resilience in the face of uncertainty.

In closing, Emily鈥檚 journey from illustrator to author exemplifies the spirit of creativity and determination that defines 麻豆视频鈥檚 O鈥橮ake Institute. We eagerly anticipate the impact of her book, confident that it will spark joy and instill confidence in young readers everywhere.

New Year, New You!
O'Pake Blog: New Year, New You

By Aleksandra Kolesnikova
Fellow of Communications

With every new year, people from all around the world start making resolutions, goals, and intentions to become a better version of themselves. As entrepreneurs, sometimes it is hard to balance work and leisure. I wanted to write this blog and remind all our amazing entrepreneurs out there that you also need rest and a few tips for wellness habits that can be integrated into your life for a better and healthier you.

Why is self-care important in the first place? Self-care is not a selfish act but an investment in productivity. If you set a healthy routine for yourself, you will find yourself having more things to do in your day and overall feeling better to do more throughout the entire day. Starting your day off with a good morning routine. Waking up early is always good for your mind and well-being, including some type of exercise and a healthy meal can make an enormous difference. Below are more tips on what you can do to have a better balance of work and lifestyle.

Set Boundaries

Define clear boundaries between work and personal life. Schedule 鈥渕e time鈥 just like you would any other appointment and stick to it. For example, if you work a 9-5 job, make sure that before and after the time you do not check your phone for emails or messages. Be able to say no if go over your work times, prioritize yourself and your boundaries.

Prioritize Sleep

Sleep is non-negotiable. Ensure you get enough rest, as it directly impacts your cognitive function and decision-making. Having about 7-8 hours of sleep everyday can have a positive impact on how you work and have energy throughout the day. If you are a night owl and have a tough time going to bed early, invest in some magnesium pills and a hot shower to relax all your muscles and try to stay away from your phone an hour before bed to have a better sleep.

Exercise Regularly

Incorporate physical activity into your routine. It does not have to be a grueling gym session; a brisk walk or a quick home workout can do wonders. If you are willing to wake up early for a workout, make sure it鈥檚 low impact such as yoga, Pilates or a walk to not push your body but wake it up. Night workouts also work for people who do not have time in the day, at those times you can do strength training, and running. Anything that you can put your energy into small movements can do wonders.

Mindful Breaks

Take short breaks throughout the day to clear your mind. Even a few minutes of deep breathing can help you refocus.

Seek Support

Do not hesitate to seek support from mentors, peers, or professionals. Talking about your challenges can provide valuable perspective. Therapy has always and will always be an immense help to people who need mental support and to get their deepest thoughts out in the world instead of keeping them inside. Do not try to do everything yourself. Delegate tasks that others can handle and automate routine processes wherever possible. It is okay to ask a friend or a co-worker for help when needed.

Let us start the new year with a new and healthy lifestyle!
